Don’t Mess With Texas… We’ve heard that a million times, but the World Court and the President of the United States are hearing it loud and clear after a recent Supreme Court Ruling. In a 6-3 decision the justices ruled that neither the World Court nor a directive from President Bush, designed to enforce a consular rights treaty signed by the United States, amounted to “enforceable federal law” that Texas is subject to.The case dates back to 2004 when the World Court, then known as the International Court of Justice, told Texas to review state convictions of 51 Mexican nationals who had not been informed of their rights under the treaty .Already, a wave of backlash against the decision is rolling through the legal and international community. Many claim the decision will put many more treaties in jeopardy and further erodes the standing of the United States in the global community. However, those close to the case of Medellin v. Texas are finally getting close to seeing justice served to a brutal murderer and applauded the decision. Medellin is currently on Texas death row. His fate will again rest in the hands of the Supreme Court as they are expected to make another ruling regarding lethal injection later this year.
